The Great Sock Drive Campaign

As we enter into what is predicted to be the coldest winter in 15 years, our thoughts turn to the suffering and outright danger facing the homeless people who are desperately trying to survive on the streets of Winnipeg. While it is impossible to tally clear statistics on the homeless folks, there are estimated to be anywhere between 2000 - 4000 and perhaps more. Only a small fraction of these people can be accomidated in the limited number of shelter beds. The majority of them are sleeping in doorways, under bridges, in boxes and anywhere they can find even the smallest degree of shelter from the cold and wind .

We know that in addition to battling sub zero temperatures and the overall detrimental effect that has on the human body, the feet are the most ravaged. Homeless people are walking all day long and often well into the night causing painful cracks, blisters, open sores and infection in their feet. Due to these conditions toes will no doubt be lost this winter.

We must get warm socks to these people and keep them coming because living out in the elements socks quickly become wet and frozen. The homeless do not have the priviledge of being able to hang their socks out to dry in sub zero temperatures.

As one homeless man put it. "I got a new pair of winter socks in 1996, it was the best gift I can ever remember getting."

Please donate today and help us help those less fortunate. Simply click on the DONATE NOW button.
